Early flight from Tbilisi Airport while staying in Sighnaghi or Telavi: setting the pick-up time

Work backwards from your flight: airport advice, realistic drive times from Kakheti, the night road over the Gombori Pass and when sleeping in Tbilisi the night before is the better plan.

If you are staying in Sighnaghi or Telavi and fly out of Tbilisi International Airport early, set the pick-up time by working backwards from the flight: Tbilisi Airport recommends being there 2 hours before departure, and published drive times from Kakheti range from about 1.5 to 2.5 hours. For a flight around 05:00 this puts the pick-up at about midnight, and spending the last night in Tbilisi can be the calmer choice. This guide is for travellers deciding when to leave, which road to expect and what to agree with a driver.

Work backwards from the flight

Start from the departure time on your ticket, not from the time you would like to leave. Tbilisi Airport’s check-in page recommends being at the airport 120 minutes before your flight. It says check-in for international flights usually opens three hours before departure and closes 60 minutes before, and that its self-service kiosks have no bag drop, so passengers with checked bags still go to the airline desk. Rules differ by airline, so check your own airline’s cut-off time as well.

Then subtract the drive and a margin you are comfortable with. The margin is your choice; in the example below we use 30 minutes as an illustration, not a rule.

How long the drive is: what the sources say

StartWhat sources say about the driveSource
SighnaghiAbout 1.5–2 hours to Tbilisi; OrbiTrip’s guide gives about 2–2.5 hours door to terminal at the airport.Wander-Lush; OrbiTrip guide
Telavi via the Gombori PassShorter mountain road over a pass at 1,620 m: about 1 h 50 min to Tbilisi (Georgian National Tourism Administration), about 2 hours to the airport (OrbiTrip guide), about 2–2.5 hours by taxi (Wander-Lush).georgia.travel; OrbiTrip guide; Wander-Lush
Telavi via Sagarejo and GurjaaniLonger, lower road: the tourism administration says it adds about 40 minutes; OrbiTrip’s guide gives about 140 km and 2.5 hours to the airport.georgia.travel; OrbiTrip guide

The figures do not fully agree, and most describe trips to Tbilisi rather than to the airport. For a flight, plan with the upper end of the range rather than the fastest figure you find. We did not time these drives ourselves.

With a mid-morning flight the pick-up falls at an ordinary early hour. With a flight around 05:00 it falls at about midnight, which means no real night’s sleep in Kakheti. In that case compare two plans: leave Kakheti at night, or move to Tbilisi the evening before and make the short airport trip from there. The second costs an extra night’s accommodation but removes the long night drive from the morning of the flight.

The night road from Telavi

From Telavi the shorter road crosses the Gombori Pass. The Georgian National Tourism Administration describes it as fully paved but with sharp turns and altitude, and warns that in mid-autumn the road may be covered by fog or snow, so drivers have to slow down. The alternative via Sagarejo and Gurjaani is longer. Ask the driver which road they plan to take at night and what they will do if the pass is foggy or closed — the answer can change the pick-up time.

Road restrictions change. Check the Roads Department of Georgia’s restrictions page close to your date; we checked that it was available on 29 October 2026, which says nothing about conditions on your night.

Why the minibus usually does not work for early flights

Wander-Lush (updated July 2026) lists the first minibus from Sighnaghi to Tbilisi at about 07:00 and vans from Telavi from about 09:00, arriving at bus stations in the city, not at the airport. For a flight before late morning that rules them out, which is why early departures from Kakheti usually mean a pre-booked car, a taxi agreed in advance or a last night in Tbilisi. Timetables change; we did not verify them on the ground.

For the general questions to ask about any airport ride, see Before you book an airport transfer.

What to agree before the night

  • Pick-up time and place: the exact address and a meeting point the driver can find in the dark; tell your guesthouse you are leaving at night.
  • Route: which road, and the plan if a pass is closed or foggy.
  • Contact: a number that answers at night and what happens if the car is late.
  • Car and luggage: number and size of bags, and child seats if needed.
  • Price and confirmation: total for the car, whether a night pick-up costs more, payment, cancellation and how the booking is confirmed.

Replace the brackets and send the same request to each provider so the answers can be compared. Do not include passport numbers or payment-card details in a quote request.

Hello. Please quote a private car from Kakheti to Tbilisi International Airport (TBS):
Date: [date]; flight: [flight number], departing [time]
Pick-up: [guesthouse/hotel name and exact address in Sighnaghi/Telavi/other]
Passengers: [adults/children and ages], child seats: [details]; luggage: [number and size of bags]
Please confirm: the pick-up time you recommend and why, the route you plan to take (and the alternative if a pass is closed or foggy), the type of car, the total price for the car and currency, whether a night pick-up changes the price, payment, cancellation terms, how the booking becomes confirmed and how I can reach the driver at night if the car is late.

Comparing offers for this ride

Put the answers side by side: recommended pick-up time, route, car, total price and whether night hours change it. A provider that recommends a later pick-up than your own calculation should explain why.

OrbiTrip is a Georgia booking platform under common ownership with this publication. Its Sighnaghi to Tbilisi price page describes a fixed price per car, payment to the driver, and says that night pick-ups cost the same as daytime ones; its Sighnaghi guide says you can choose Tbilisi airport as the destination when booking. These are the provider’s own terms, not our independent test, and its passenger terms apply. Its pages also give different drive times for this route, so ask for the recommended pick-up time for your flight. This guide does not establish that it is the cheapest or best option.
