If you want to see two or three of the sights near Kutaisi — Prometheus Cave, Martvili Canyon and Okatse Canyon — in one day, the transport decision is less about the distance and more about the return leg and the waiting. A car that waits at every stop avoids looking for a ride back from a rural visitor centre; separate one-way rides only make sense if your return is arranged. Whatever you choose, agree beforehand what happens if a site is closed by weather on the day. This guide is for independent travellers, couples and families staying in Kutaisi.

Why the format matters more than the distance
The three sites are managed by Georgia’s Agency of Protected Areas, each with its own entrance and tickets sold on site. Getting to one of them is rarely the hard part; the questions that change your day are how long you stay, who takes you to the next site and how you get back to Kutaisi at the end.
A one-way ride ends when you are dropped off. If you then want a second site or the return, you need another car, a pre-arranged pick-up time or public transport whose times you have confirmed locally. A car hired for the day carries you between all stops and back, so the price usually includes the driver’s time while you walk — which is exactly what you need to compare between offers.
Compare the realistic options
| Option | Works well when | Check before you choose |
|---|---|---|
| Separate one-way rides | You visit one site and your return pick-up is fixed in advance. | Who collects you, at what time, and what happens if you are late or the driver is. |
| Private car that waits | You want two or three sites, your own pace and a door-to-door return. | Hours included, extra-time cost, waiting at each stop, plan B if a site closes. |
| Shared group tour | You travel alone or on a budget and accept a fixed schedule. | Which sites are actually included that day, time at each stop and the pick-up point. |
| Public minibus | You have spare time and flexible plans. | Departure and return times on the day — we did not verify schedules for this guide. |
For the general difference between a one-way transfer and a day trip with waiting, see our guide Tbilisi to Kazbegi: one-way transfer or a day trip? The same logic applies here, with more than one stop.
Weather can close a site on the day
All three sites are managed by Georgia’s Agency of Protected Areas, and closures can come at short notice. On 3 January 2026 Georgia’s public broadcaster 1TV reported that the agency had temporarily closed Okatse Canyon, Okatse Waterfall, Sataplia and Navenakhevi Cave because of bad weather, and that Prometheus Cave and Martvili Canyon would reopen on 5 January.
An independent travel guide, Wander-Lush, describes the same pattern: the sites are open all year, but in winter Okatse is more likely to close after rain or snow, and boats do not run when rivers are high. Between November and March especially, treat a three-site plan as “two certain, one possible”, and do not count on a boat ride being available.
Agree a plan B before the day
- If a site is closed: does the driver propose another stop, shorten the day, or change the price? A provider’s promise about a closed road does not automatically cover a closed site, so ask about both.
- Order of stops: ask whether you can change it on the day, so the most weather-sensitive site can move or drop out.
- Time: how many hours are included, from which moment they count, and the price of extra time.
- Tickets: entrance and boat tickets are bought at the sites and are normally not in a car price — confirm this so you can compare offers fairly.
- Children: ask the sites about any age or height limits for trails and boats before you travel with young children, and ask the provider for child seats in writing.
Check opening details where they are published
On 29 October 2026 the Agency of Protected Areas’ website did not show current visitor details (opening hours, tickets or rules) for these sites; its earlier service pages for them no longer opened at their previous addresses. Because opening hours and ticket prices can change, this guide does not repeat them. Check the current information with the agency or the visitor centre close to your date, and ask your driver to confirm the day before.
A request you can send
Replace the brackets before sending this to any provider, and send the same request to each one so the answers are comparable. Do not include passport numbers or payment-card details in a quote request.
Hello. Please quote a private car with driver for a day from Kutaisi: Date: [date]; pick-up: [hotel name and address in Kutaisi] at [time] Stops: [Prometheus Cave / Martvili Canyon / Okatse Canyon], order flexible Return: [same address / other address] Passengers: [adults/children and ages], child seats: [details] Please confirm: the total price for the car and currency, how many hours are included and the cost of extra time, that the driver waits at every stop, that entrance and boat tickets are not included, what you offer if a site or road is closed on the day (another stop, shorter day or price change), payment, cancellation terms and how the booking becomes confirmed.
For questions that apply to any booked ride, see Before you book an airport transfer.
Comparing offers for this day
Put each answer side by side: total price for the car or per person, hours included, number of stops, waiting, return address, what is excluded and the plan for closures. A cheaper offer with fewer hours or no return can cost more once you add the missing ride.
OrbiTrip is a Georgia booking platform under common ownership with this publication. Its “Canyons & Prometheus Cave” day-trip page from Kutaisi describes a private car for your group with waiting at every stop, pick-up and return at your Kutaisi address, entrance and boat tickets not included, payment to the driver with no prepayment, free child seats on request and an alternative stop at the same price if a road closes. These are the provider’s own terms, not our independent test, and its passenger terms apply; ask it, like any provider, what happens if a site rather than a road is closed. This guide does not establish that it is the cheapest or best option.

This is a planning guide for a multi-stop day out from Kutaisi, not an official timetable, a price list or a first-hand ride test. Sources were checked on 29 October 2026; opening hours, prices and closures change and must be checked again before travel.
