Plan a David Gareja day trip around the lower monastery, St David’s Lavra. Travel guides updated in 2025–2026 report that Lavra is open and free to enter, while the upper Udabno monastery with the best-known frescoes, on the ridge along the Georgia–Azerbaijan border, has been closed or only occasionally accessible since 2019. That changes how long you need, which transport makes sense and what to ask a driver before you book. This guide is for travellers based in Tbilisi deciding between a private car, a tour or getting there on their own.

What is open and what is not
David Gareja is a group of cave monasteries in the semi-desert of south-east Kakheti. Its two best-known parts are St David’s Lavra at the foot of the hill and Udabno Monastery on the ridge above it. The Georgia–Azerbaijan border in this area has never been fully demarcated, and the ridge is part of the dispute. JAMnews reported in April 2019 that Azerbaijani border guards blocked access to the complex for three days, and Reuters reported in September 2019 that access had been restricted since late April of that year.
What travellers report since then is consistent in substance, though not in detail: Wander-Lush (updated March 2026) says Lavra is open without restriction and Udabno is still inaccessible, with Georgian border guards turning back people who try the ridge path; Showcaves and Viajeros Activos also describe Udabno as closed; MyDrive describes the situation in 2025–2026 as unstable, with people sometimes let through. We found no official page that publishes the current status, so treat the upper monastery as probably closed and anything more as a bonus.
What this changes about your day
When the ridge walk to Udabno was open, a visit took several hours. Wander-Lush now estimates about 30–40 minutes to see Lavra; MyDrive suggests at least three hours on site if you also climb towards the colourful Rainbow Hills nearby. The site is roughly 100–110 km from Tbilisi by road, about 1.5–2 hours each way according to Wander-Lush and OrbiTrip’s own guide, so most of a day is spent on the road.
That makes two questions more important than the price per kilometre: how many hours you pay for, and what you add to make the drive worthwhile — a walk in the Rainbow Hills, a meal in Udabno village or a longer stop on the way back. Decide this before you ask for quotes, so that offers can be compared on the same plan.
Compare the realistic options
| Option | Works well when | Check before you choose |
|---|---|---|
| Private car that waits | You want your own timing, extra stops and a door-to-door return. | Hours included, extra-time cost, route and car, what “Udabno” means in the offer, plan if a site or road is closed. |
| Organised tour | You want a guide to explain the history and the border situation. | Which stops are included now that Udabno is reported closed, time at each stop, group size. |
| Seasonal shuttle (Gareji Line) | It is running on your date and the fixed schedule suits you. | Whether it operates at all: Wander-Lush’s author replied on 12 October 2026 that it did not operate this season. Confirm directly before relying on it. |
| Minibus + local taxi | You have time and flexible plans. | There is no regular minibus to the monastery; Wander-Lush describes few vans to Sagarejo or Udabno and a taxi from there. We did not verify times. |
| Self-drive | You are comfortable on rural roads. | The route via Sagarejo and Udabno; travel guides warn that the road via Rustavi has a long dirt section. |

Road, weather and season
The sources agree that the last part of the trip is rural and less predictable than the highway, but they disagree about how much is unpaved: Wander-Lush describes the Sagarejo–Udabno route as paved with a gravel section near Udabno, while OrbiTrip’s guide describes the final 25–30 km as a mix of patched tarmac, gravel and dirt. Both Wander-Lush and Viajeros Activos warn that dirt sections become difficult after rain. Ask the driver which route and car they plan to use.
The site is exposed and has almost no shade. Travel guides recommend spring and autumn, warn about heat and snakes in summer and about snow, ice and wind in winter. Bring water and snacks: there is a church shop but no restaurant at Lavra.
At the monastery
- Dress: Lavra is a working monastery. Cover shoulders and knees; women are usually expected to cover their hair.
- Entry: travel guides report no entrance fee; bring small cash for donations, the church shop and toilets.
- Documents and border: carry your passport, follow any instructions from border guards and do not try to walk past them up the ridge. Be careful with photos of border posts and avoid flying a drone.

Comparing offers for this day
Put the answers side by side: total price for the car or per person, hours included, stops, return time and address, and what happens if the upper monastery or a road is closed. If an offer lists “Udabno” as a stop, ask whether that means the upper monastery, which is reported closed, or Udabno village and the nearby hills.
OrbiTrip is a Georgia booking platform under common ownership with this publication. Its David Gareji and Udabno day-trip page from Tbilisi describes a private car for your group, pick-up and return at your Tbilisi address, waiting at every stop, payment to the driver with no prepayment, free child seats on request and an alternative stop at the same price if a road closes. These are the provider’s own terms, not our independent test, and its passenger terms apply. The page lists “Udabno” as a second stop, so ask it, like any provider, what that stop will be on your date and what happens if the upper monastery is closed. This guide does not establish that it is the cheapest or best option.
Sources & scope
This is a planning guide for a day trip from Tbilisi, not an official status notice, a timetable or a first-hand ride test. Access to the upper monastery depends on the border situation and can change without notice; we found no official page that publishes it.
